Keeping vegan leather looking new: the whole routine
Soap, water, a soft cloth and four habits. Everything we know about making a PU bag last.
The good news first
Vegan leather is easier to live with than the animal kind: it does not need conditioner, it does not darken from water spots, and a wipe handles what a stain remover would be summoned for elsewhere. The whole care kit is a soft cloth and mild soapy water.
The weekly wipe
Wring a cloth out in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap, wipe the surface, then go over it again with a cloth wrung out in plain water and let it air dry. That is the entire ritual. Do the strap too, it collects hand oils faster than the body.
Skip alcohol wipes, kitchen sprays and anything with a citrus label. They cut through grime by cutting through the finish, and the surface loses a little of its softness every time.
Storage that does not leave marks
Before a long rest, stuff the bag with paper so the folds do not set, and let it stand rather than hang loaded. Straps remember the stretch. Keep it away from the radiator and the sunny shelf, heat is what ages PU, not use.
Rain, snow and the car seat
A rained-on bag just needs to hang open and dry at room temperature. What it does not forgive is the sealed summer car: the heat behind glass can soften the surface finish. Take the bag with you, it weighs nothing.
What not to do, ever
No washing machine, no tumble dryer, no iron, even through a towel. Surface cleaning is the whole recipe, and it genuinely covers everything a commute can throw at a bag.
